Security screens come in stainless steel mesh, perforated aluminium, diamond grille and flyscreen options. Each type offers a different balance of security, airflow, visibility and cost. Stainless steel mesh and perforated aluminium give the highest level of protection, while flyscreens are for insect control rather than security.

Yes. Security screens significantly reduce the risk of a break-in by removing easy access points. Most burglaries are opportunistic, and a properly installed security screen creates a strong physical barrier that deters intruders and makes forced entry extremely difficult.

To be classified as a true security screen, a product must comply with:

  • AS5039 for manufacture
  • AS5040 for installation
  • AS5041 for impact, knife shear, jemmy, pull and probe testing

Screens that do not meet these standards should not be marketed as security screens.

Compliant security screens have an AS5039 compliance label fixed to the frame. Many also carry National Security Screen Association certification, which shows the product has passed independent testing and meets the required performance standards.

High quality security screens use high-tensile 304 grade stainless steel mesh. It offers superior resistance to cutting and tearing, giving you the strength and durability to keep your family safer at home.

Yes, when they are made from a single perforated aluminium sheet and installed correctly. Perforated aluminium security screens offer strong impact resistance, excellent durability and do not suffer from the corrosion caused by mixed metals.

Most premium security screens come with a manufacturer warranty of 10 years or more, covering the frame, mesh and powder coating. Locks are usually covered under a separate manufacturer warranty.

Security screen doors use a triple locking system to meet Australian Standards. The door locks at three points along the frame with a single turn of the key, giving far greater resistance than a single-point flyscreen lock.

A keyguard is a protective shield fitted around the internal door handle on diamond grille security doors. It stops intruders reaching the lock through the grille. Stainless steel mesh and perforated aluminium doors do not need keyguards.

Security screens should be cleaned every three months in urban areas, and more often in coastal locations. Regular washing removes the dust, salt and pollutants that build up in the mesh and affect how it looks and how long it lasts.

Yes. Any security screen that meets Australian Standards can also work as a fall prevention screen. Fall prevention screens are required on certain windows where the fall height exceeds building code limits, especially in homes with children.

No. Flyscreens are not designed to withstand force and do not meet fall prevention or security standards. They should never be used where fall protection is required.

Some security screens are tested to comply with Australian Standard 3959 for bushfire zones. Performance depends on the Bushfire Attack Level, ranging from BAL-29 to BAL-FZ. Always confirm the testing certification for your specific location.
